About the Bossie

Updated: Aug 16, 2020

It's believed that thousands of years ago, tea was discovered in the far East. The Chinese found that brews, with purported medicinal properties, could be made from steeping leaves in boiled water and that's how tea as we know it came to be. (#chinesetea)

Throughout the ages, it seems tea was the health, and therefore the wealth of people. And though we enjoy Rooibos the same today, this wasn't always the case. (#rooibos)

"Early San and Khoi people may have used this broom-like bush for medicinal purposes"

Early San and Khoi people may have used this broom-like bush for medicinal purposes, thousands of years ago but there exist no official records of it being steeped, as tee, until the first colonialists arrived. With their keen knowledge and experience of Asian tea, these people set about taming this shrewd shrub, allowing for cultivation in and around the area where it naturally grows, but no farther. Despite the numerous attempts of foreign farmers, Rooibos has proven quite resilient to the demands of the outside world, refusing to grow anywhere but in its beloved home, the Cederberg mountains of South Africa. (#cederberg #southafrica)

A humble, small-town plant by nature, it has since its discovery become somewhat of a celebrity, gathering a growing number of followers in the health and beauty industries, both locally and internationally. (#health #beauty)

Rooibos vs Redbush

It's fame finally reached America, where one company tried to patent the name, Rooibos, and inevitably failed. Rooibos, after all, is a native word, meaning Redbush and given the failure to grow it anywhere else, it seemed only natural that such a patent should belong to its homeland. (#redbush #royboss)

Rooibos is a naturally sweet yet earthy herbal tea, likened to Hibiscus, low in tannins and caffeine-free, which in itself makes it the perfect beverage. But it also sports a host of health benefits which have been tested and proven. Blended with other medicinal herbs, Rooibos reaches the fullness of its flavour and potential. A Super Tea!

In the posts to come, we'll leaf through various herbs and their properties and find out why Rooibos is the perfect base for tea blending. (#supertea #herbs)
